Emma Collins continues to dominate her VF55 category as Harriers out in force for new Bodelwyddan Parkrun

It’s fast and flat and a great place to get a PB. Ellesmere Port Running Club 5k took place on a warm Thursday evening with 4 Harriers taking to the starting line and quick was certainly the order of the day. Craig Jones was first Harrier home in 42nd and 18:23. His second fastest recorded 5k as he continues to get closer to being a sub 18 minute 5k runner. It’s only a matter of time.

The outstanding run of the day goes to Emma Collins coming in 117th, 15th Lady and 1st VF55 in 21:00. Before the race Emma was hoping for sub-22 mins as she recorded her fastest 5k in 3 years. She also beat all the VF50 women across the line and most of the VF45 category too finishing 46 places  and 1 min 51 seconds ahead of the 2nd placed lady in her category. She’s truly in a league of her own.

Father and son Fred and Paul Jones made up the foursome with Fred putting in another consistent performance in 166th, 7th VM60 and 22:55. Paul has only recently taken up running and put in a fantastic performance smashing his recent parkrun performances in 26:33.

In another fast race on Sunday Shaun Hughes took to the start line of the Birchwood 10k representing Denbigh Harriers and North Wales in the Inter-County competition. A wet morning saw Shaun finish 18th in 35:43, his 2nd fastest recorded time over the distance.

The inaugural Bodelwyddan parkrun took place on Saturday with an impressive 208 turning up and among them 11 Harriers, 9 racing with Menai Baugh and Andy Morris volunteering. Billed as good training for cross-country, the course incorporates trails around Bodelwyddan Castle with a great deal of climb and a few challenging sections.

Shaun Hughes in his first run of the weekend was 3rd in 18:28 and only 10 seconds off his Conwy parkrun PB for this much tougher course. It’s good to see Vic Belshaw back and taking 16th in 21:31. David Baugh was 31st in 23:29 with Paul Goffey 52nd in 25:27. First of the ladies home was Elen Baugh in 63rd & 10th Lady in 26:07 followed by Mari Williams 81st 27:37 and Sarah Bayliss 83rd & 17th Lady 27:46. Also finishing strongly on this tough course were Robert Parry 101th 30:00, Nicola Field 134th & 39th Lady 32:54.

Parkruning elsewhere this weekend were Chris Baldwin taking 54th and 2nd VM60 in 24:15 in his first run at Dalby Forest parkrun. Duncan Jones ran for the second time at Shrewsbury where he finished6 3rd and 3rd VM55 in a course PB of 22:13.

Harriers Noel Morris Summer Handicap Series heats up as both Men’s and Women’s course records are smashed

A bright Tuesday evening with pleasant temperature, no wind, and dry ground saw the 5th race of 7 in this year’s Noel Morris Summer Handicap Series. This is the point in the series where things start heating up. Participants have to complete 5 races in the series to qualify as the overall series winner. Those who race over 5 races get the benefit of dropping their worst positions over the series. Additionally summer speed training which takes place every remaining Tuesday of the month starts to pay off.

21 runners turned up for the race with the field open with the first runner starting off over 20 mins before the last runner, but in a race where everyone is pitted against themselves and the handicapper, it’s great to have a race anyone no matter their ability can win.

34 mins and 35 seconds after he set off Ron Birch was the first home. A fantastic run from Ron knocking 4 mins off his last run here and fresh from his 10k at the weekend, he was nearly 3 mins ahead of the rest of the field as he completes his last summer series handicap race before he turns 80. 2nd went to Rhian Pierce in 20 mins 31 and a new course record. Rhian stormed back from a career-threatening injury to take 53 seconds off her personal best and break Emma Collins long-standing record. Third was Mat Jones in 20 mins 55. Mat also is showing great improvement this summer having taken nearly 4 mins off since his first race of this season back in April.

It was a tight finish for 4th and 5th with Tony Benton and Emma Collins having both raced so closely this season started together with Tony just getting a 2 second edge on Emma to finish in 21:38 and 21:40 respectively. Both in their first time under 22 minutes this season.Further down the field, the men’s course record also fell. Shaun Hughes continues to have a fantastic season, completing the course in 17:38 and taking over 20 seconds off his own best time from last season.

As far as the series goes, only Diane Roberts has done 5 races so far and must be looking good for a podium place. She stands at 59 points over the 5 races, lowest score to win. However there are 4 runners who have completed 4 races, with Tony Benton (22 points), Phil Hayes (26 points), Tony Wood (53 points) and Mari Jones (54 points) all in contention if they can drop their higher placed race, though with 2 races left the competition is wide open.

In another quiet racing weekend, 5 Harriers took to the Clwydians on Sunday for the annual the 2 Hillforts fell race. Runners race 9.2 miles with 1871ft of climbing up and over hillforts Penycloddiau and Moel Arthur. As much of this summer, conditions were hot and humid but at least it stayed dry throughout the race. First Harrier home was Tony Wood taking 9th in 1:20.09 followed shortly behind by Jonathan Fleming in 14th and 1:23.32. Also in the top 20 and taking the male prize for first local to finish was Owen Conry 18th in 1:24.57. Of the ladies Sioned Griffiths was first Harrier home in 43rd and 1:40.25 and taking the prize for first local lady home. She was followed in by Anwen Brown in 54th and a great time of 1:46.14 in this punishing race.

The Harriers were represented in 3 parkruns this week. Just over the border, Rob Gotts continued his comeback in 26:28 at Chester. Emma Collins took 3rd Lady in 22:06 at Conwy. Over in Wepre, Elen Baugh ran a fantastic PB in 27:04 taking nearly 1 min 30 off her previous best on this tough course and finishing as 8th Lady. David Baugh took 13th in 23:07 which Sarah Bayliss continues her fine form as 11th Lady in 28:02.

Only Diane has done 5 races so far and must be looking for a podium place but there are several with 3 or 4 in the bag who should now be looking to complete the series. With only two races left Phil is still looking a good bet, but I think the smart money is transferring to Tony B.

Heartfelt thanks to Dawn and Steve for officiating. It enabled me to run for the first time since June last year when there were similar conditions of pleasant temperature, no wind, and dry ground. Obviously good racing conditions, and both male and female records fell with Shaun knocking over 20 seconds off his best time last year, and Rhian stormed back from a career-threatening injury to take 53 seconds off her personal best and break Emma’s 21m21.  Emma did that several years ago when she had to go the long way round the bushes (i.e. not over the stream) and that was probably worth 20m50 using the current ‘short cut’ (which you will remember was necessitated by the silly fence the school put up). So I think Rhian’s 20m31 is a small but definite improvement. Note that this evening Emma put in a sub 22 effort as well – and only Rhian and Ceri B are in that club with her. Another notable effort was by Ron in his last race before M80-hood, and 4 minutes quicker than his last run here.

Category wins a plenty as Denbigh Harriers oldest and youngest men take medals this weekend

Quiet racing week this week and given the heat is back, that’s not a bad thing. Deestriders summer series continued on Thursday with Emma Collins the only Harrier on the course, fellow series runner Tony Benton unfortunately sidelined with his Achilles. Emma continued her fantastic form as 29th, 5th lady & 1st VF55 in 32:55 and taking 40 seconds off her season PB which she set in June. One race left in the series but 3 wins in 3 pretty much seals the category win for Emma.

Parkrun always sets the weekend up and at Conwy Sarah Bayliss put in another consistently fast run with her 3rd fastest time on this course in 25:49 and clearly not holding anything back in spite of knowing she’s racing the Vale of Clwyd the next day. Over in the newly established Newborough Forest parkrun, Paul & Mari Jones ran this tough forest course. Great to see Paul back after injury completing the course in 28:31, followed in by Mari – a great run for her – in 37:55.

Sunday morning dawned bright and hot for the rescheduled Vale of Clwyd 5k and 10k races – polar opposite to the snow which caused the original postponement. 14 Harriers took to the course accounting for 15% of the field and a great testament to these cracking local races. The 10k went to plan for all involved and it was fantastic to see our youngest, Shaun Hughes and oldest, Ron Birch, men – both with such a fine running pedigree – lining up together on the start line.

First home for the Harriers was Shaun Hughes 2nd in 36:08. Another fantastic achievement for Shaun having raced comfortably holding second place the whole way round and finishing over 90 seconds ahead of the 3rd place runner. Fred Jones came in next, another good run for him in 13th & 2nd VM60 47:24. A cracking time at his first time on this undulating course for 3rd Harrier home Paul Goffey 20th in 50:03. 1st lady Harrier home was Melina Morris in a great run 24th & 1st VF40 in 50:28 and though she continues to be surprised with her category wins and places, there’s more to come from Mel. Great to see Chris Baldwin back racing after recent injury and rightly pleased with  27th in 51:43 and holding off Bob Neale 29th 52:38, though the battle between these two super vets in not just over.

Sarah Bayliss, yesterday’s parkrun wasn’t enough for her this week took =33rd & 1st VF50 in 54:47. Fantastic to see such great performances from Sarah and such a well-deserved win after also coming back from a long-standing injury. Anwen Brown had a fantastic run in 36th & 3rd VF40 55:31 showing that whilst she prefers the hills to the roads, she’s got plenty of ability for both. Llyr Jones, another coming back from injury showed the work he’s putting in on the hills are paying off in 38th and 56:28. Lastly and by no means least for the Harriers was Ron Birch. Spring chicken Ron who turns 80 next month, once again showed age is just a number as he finished in 54th & 1st VM70 in 78:07.

Over in the 5k, Craig Jones and Sioned Griffiths both put in fantastic performances and would likely have taken 2nd in the mens and womens race respectively but a missed turn meant the 5k field ran most of the 10k instead with the average finisher having run 9k. Down the field Dawn Marshall & Diane Roberts raced for 5k, then used the rest of the course as a recovery.

So to round up at the Vale of Clwyd 10k, in a fantastic day out for the club, Denbigh Harriers took the biggest prize haul home with 4 of the 13 medals on offer with Shaun Hughes 2nd male, Melina Morris 1st VF40, Sarah Bayliss 1st VF50 and Ron Birch 1st VM70.

Emma Collins shows her class as she takes 1st VF55 at Helena Tipping 10k whilst Menai Baugh continues to dominate in her category at local fell races

Sunday saw the annual Helena Tipping 10k with 745 turning out to run in the rain & wind. 10 years ago this was Emma Collins first road race. 10 years later she was only 30 seconds slower & finished in 45:16 and 1st VF55 and 17th lady out of 315. Also having fantastic runs were Sharon Griffiths finishing in 63:12, a PB of 10 mins and Lian Jones finishing in 63:17 in her first ever race.

Four Denbigh Harriers turned out amongst the 86 runners who took to the hills for the lovely Green, Green Grass of Home Fell race which is organised by Tony Benton of Denbigh Harriers and marshalled by many of Tony’s local friends and the Harriers. This 5 mile / 8 km race starts above Llangynhafal  was run this year on a warm, clear summer’s evening last Wednesday.  The field of runners set off on a challenging route that took in some rarely trodden tracks and afforded some spectacular panoramic views of the Vale of Clwyd and surrounding hills. On their way, competitors coped with a combination of twisting paths, lung-busting climbs and head-high banks of bracken before descending over open heath to the finish. Ceri Belshaw led the quartet of Harriers home with a strong run, finishing in 53:19. Mathew Jones, who was competing the race for the first time, finished in 57:07 followed by Katy Baugh in 61:27. Congratulations to Menai Baugh whose determined effort saw her finish first in the VF60 age category in 63:44.

On Saturday, the start line of the Push up the Pincyn fell race felt like a winter cross country race as 35 odd runners lined up shivering in their vests facing heavy rain and wind interspersed with hail. Thankfully over the 6.2 mile course the weather eased but stayed cool making the 1,443 foot of climb more comfortable than fell races of late. The five Denbigh harriers managed to avoid getting bitten by farm dogs (two other runners were less lucky) and enjoyed what is a lovely route through fields to Clocaenog village and then onto forestry tracks and paths to the Pincyn. The return was through narrow paths and a long climb back to the Clawdd Newydd show ground. Menai Baugh was 1st VF60 in 1hr11, Elen Baugh finished in 1hr10, Duncan Jones finished just over the hour mark with Mathew Jones just ahead under the hour and David Baugh (3rd M50) in 56 minutes. As this was a village show and sports, David was also 1st equal in the Senior Couples Walking race with his partner Steve Toogood from Buckley winning the handsome prize of £1 each.

A quiet weekend on the Parkrun front. Jeff Jones ran another personal best for 5K at Conwy and was 3rd M65 and 142nd in 27m16 a quite remarkable improvement this year, Jeff woho competes in the VM65 category. Sarah Bayliss continued her attack on Wepre with another good run in 28m48 (63rd and 1st W50 and only 2 minutes slower than her extremely good recent PB on this course. Chris Baldwin set off for some parkrun tourism to Anglesey and was 29th in 25m41 at the new parkrun at Newborough beach which has the distinction of including a small sand dune after the first half mile and then a mile of climb of about 150ft on nice trails through the woods – another challenging parkrun nearly in our backyard.

Team Baugh impress in the 43rd Snowdon International Race

Snowdon looked a bit foreboding with very low cloud and little wind for the Snowdon International Race of 9.6 miles and over 3000 foot of ascent but actually it turned out to be good running conditions for the Baugh Family. Katy in 411th and sneaking under the 2hour mark in 01:59:19 and Elen, 444th 02:02:45, improved their 2016 times despite Elen taking a big tumble resulting in a visit to the first aid tent. Menai continues with her cracking form taking  3rd VF60 & 499th in 02:09:55 enjoying the run immensely. David had a steady run gaining positions the whole race finishing 237th in 01:42:09.

Elsewhere, at Caernarfon’s Race the Train, Fred Jones was the only Harrier on the course taking 3rd VM60 in 20:39 in this fast and furious race. Phil Hayes completed the RunWales North Wales Half Marathon in 1hr 42min 03sec and just under 2mins faster than last year.

Over the border, Duncan Jones completed the Shrewsbury 10k, one of the more attractive and hilly of the ‘town Centre’ races. Warm but easier racing conditions saw Duncan in his first race for a few weeks and pleased to finish in 46.03, 8th out of 71 in VM55s. Abigail Corfe completed her second half marathon – this one a hot challenging trail run – since coming back from injury at the Race for Life Half Marathon at Cheshire’s Cholmondeley Castle.

Parkrun mirrored the other weeks races both locally and over the border with Jeff Jones improved on his time last week at Conwy in 27:51 and Sarah Bayliss had a steady run at Wepre in 28:32 and 8th lady. Rob Gotts and Rob Taylor ran Canterbury in 29:12 and 29:13 respectively.

It’s first for Craig Jones at Hawarden Estate Trail 5k whilst Elen Baugh races her 100th Parkrun

Sunday’s inaugural Hawarden Trail 5K took place this Sunday with two Harriers taking to the start line with Craig Jones out to win it with an opening first kilometre in under 3m30 despite the corrugated ground and fierce little hill. Unfortunately the course had to be changed at the last minute so the 5k lead runners hit three stiles on the descent through the wood and caught all the back-markers in the 10K race which meant for long queues and ankle breaking stuff getting past them on the narrow cart-track on the way uphill out of the wood. Exciting, though, until the constant jinking, acceleration and hitting bushes took its toll on the respiratory system. VO2 max where were you?? It was a bit short of 5K too but nobody was complaining as we crawled round the second lap wishing for the finish. Craig got his first outright win in 20:30 and Chris Baldwin was 7th and 1st VM60 (and 1st VM50 for that matter) in 27:26.

CJ Hawarden Estate 5k
Craig finishing hard up the final mound.

The toughest race of the week was also on Sunday with 6 harriers heading over to Llanberis to run the Scott Snowdonia Trail Marathon and Half Marathon. There are usually a few Harriers on the course with many running this year for the second or third time alongside those making their debut. Taking on the toughie, not just 26.2 miles of running but 1685mtrs climb too, was Ceri Belshaw. Ceri who’s previously raced the Snowdonia marathon but much prefers the hills, finished in 5 hrs 43 mins and was 18th lady overall.

Five Harriers also raced the half marathon. First harrier home Emma Collins, racing this race for the 2nd time, finished in a great time of 2 hrs 37 mins, nearly 5 mins quicker than her previous time and taking 3rd VF50. Second home was Daniel Schraibman in a time of 3 hrs 11 mins, his third time racing this event. Next was Anwen Brown in a time of 3 hrs 16mins and a massive 17 minutes faster than last year. All her training is clearly paying off. David Spencer,  3 hrs 34 mins and Roger Snaith, 3 hrs 46 mins brought the Harriers home, both taking to Snowdon for their first time at this race.

Saturday started as always with Parkrun. 4 Harriers made the short trip to Conwy with Elen Baugh leading the Harriers home in 25:09 and 7th lady as she completed her 100th Parkrun. She was supported around the course by Dad David Baugh 25:10 with Jeff Jones 28:08 and Rob Parry 29:01 also racing.

In his second race of the day David Baugh and wife Menai ran the Tal y Fan Fell race starting from the Rowen carnival field and then completing an 8.9 mile loop climbing 2,300 foot straight up and over Tal y Fan towards Penmaenmawr for 3 miles before heading back towards the Conwy valley. It was a hot sunny afternoon with only a slight breeze on the top of Tal y Fan to cool the runners down resulting in a few drop outs. Menai finished as first VF60 in a time of 2.05 (45th overall) with David finishing 20 minutes ahead of her in 30th place.

Earlier in the week, it was great to see Rhian Pierce back racing after a long spell out of running from injury. Settling quickly back into fine form, Rhian took 3rd lady at the Druid Fell Race.

Weekly round up 09.07.18

Despite the heat it’s a week of multiple races with Phil Hayes leading the way and taking to the start line three times.

The racing week started on Tuesday night on the fields behind Denbigh Leisure Centre for the monthly Noel Morris Summer Handicap Series. It comes as no surprise now that it was hot, 26C, but the heat at least dry with a breeze and the ground firm with short grass. Obviously the England v Colombia game was an alternative attraction – and some resting before the Ruthin 5K – so numbers were down but this was great for the championship chances of those who were there.  ‘Man of the match’ was Tony Benton who got himself through six of the opposition and was a lot closer in time to Phil Hayes than usual. Nice to see Sioned and Ruth back and going well too. Note that Jeff knocked 4 minutes off his best previous time, and with four races gone Phil is looking like the bookies favourite for the championship.

Results saw Jeff Jones take 1st in 28:59 nearly 2 minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Diane Roberts was 2nd in 33:57 with 45 seconds lead on  Sioned Griffiths 24:39 in 3rd. Ruth Crowther was just pipped to 4th in 34:48 with 5th placed Tony Benton 22:06 not far behind. 6th was Gerwyn Lloyd in 24:25, 7th Melina Morris 24:43 and 8th Menai Baugh in the first of her weeks races in 26:58.In his first race of the week Philip Hayes 21:45 took 9th with 10th Duncan Jones 24:31. Anwen Brown was 11th in 28:16. Great to see Tony Wood back from injury in 12th and 19:50 with 13th taken by Jon Whitehead in 27:21.

With members choosing the Ruthin Evening 5k over the Handicap we expected a strong turnout and we saw 15 Harriers line up for this popular local race. No surprise to see Shaun Hughes as first harrier home and 3rd placed in a new PB of 17:10. It’s only a matter of time before Shaun goes below the 17 min mark at this distance. He was followed shortly by Craig Jones also running a PB as he finished 8th in 18:31. Third harrier over the line was Philip Hayes putting in an impressive 20:59 despite having raced the previous night in 27th. Also finishing in the top quarter of the field were Hywel Roberts in 36th 22:23 and first lady Harrier Katy Baugh 41st 22:58.

Next home was Rhian Griffiths-Jones running 25:58 for 64th place only a couple of months after giving birth as she starts to get back to peak fitness for the Great North Run with Sali Powell just behind her in 65th 25:59 and Hannah McDonnell 89th in 28:13. Jeff Jones, also racing for the 2nd consecutive night was 101st in 29:25 with Nicola Field just behind him in 102nd 29:28. Angela Beedles was 133th in 33:19. Jess Jones running her first 5k race and supported round the course by Dad Ian finished strongly in 152nd and 36:51, Ian taking the next place in 153rd and 36:53 with Caroline Parry also pacing a friend around the course in 165th 44:52.

Deestriders Summer Series Race was two in the series of four on Thursday night with only two Denbigh Harriers turning out on another nice sunny evening. Tony Benton, not letting his achievements of Tuesday hold him back and Emma Collins ran around together in a group of four, finishing 35th 33:27 Emma & 36th 33:44 Tony in a competitive field of 92. Emma in a consistent run with last month was 1st VF55 and Tony, slightly faster than last month was 3rd VM55.

Ian Jones and Nicola Field ran Let’s Rock, Conwy 10k 11am Saturday morning . It was a flat 10km race along the coastal path towards Penmaenmawr though with the very hot weather making it a difficult run. Provisional results are Ian 52.07 and Nicola 64.55.

Also on Saturday , there was just one Denbigh Harrier running the Moel Siabod Fell Race. This 5.8 mile/ 8 k classic fell race starts and finishes in the carnival field in Capel Curig. It ascends 2300ft/750m from the field, through the forest, up a rocky trail to the summit of the mountain and back the same way. Views on the way up and from the summit were stunning. In 25C heat Menai Baugh enjoyed running her second race of the week in 1 hour 38 minutes and picked up the prize for the first VF60.

At Parkrun this week, Phil Hayes ran his 3rd 5k of the week at Conwy to finish in 14th and 21:14. Dawn Marshall finished in 100th and 29:18. Over at Wepre Sarah Bayliss finished in 44th and 27:55.

A couple of special mentions this week to finish the report. Firstly it was great to see previous member Martin Cortvriend back at Conwy Parkrun this weekend. Martin, who has a 20:29PB for the course, completed it this week in 48:32 which is fantastic given it was his first run back following recent surgery. Secondly, three time racer Phil Hayes three daughters raced their first Junior Parkruns at Alyn Waters Parkrun in Wrexham on Sunday. 8 year old Rose was second over the line in a fantastic 8:45 for the 2k race and 1st girl home beating many boys and girls considerably older than herself. Younger sisters and twins Ella and Gwen were 18th 11:22 and 19th 11:23 respectively in a field of 63, again beating many considerably older children.
