It was a very busy week of running for Denbigh Harriers with over 40 harriers competing in 10 events far and wide with two Harriers running twice.

In the the first North Wales Cross Country fixture in Wrexham there were 20 Harriers taking part in this fast and furious flat race. In the women’s 6.6k race the first two Harriers home were Mel Morris and Alaw Medi Evans separated by 1 second. They were ably supported by Tracey Williams winning her category and Elen Baugh. October 2019 Results
In terms of weather this has been a ‘Goldilocks’ season: pretty dry, reasonable temperatures, and no gales. So 10C and heavy rain on top of several days of heavier rain meant that only the hardier committed souls turned up. Mud and soft grass does make a difference to the strength requirements and the fitter brethren and sorority gain an advantage in these circumstances. Flat, boring road it isn’t! A good prelude to the Cross Country on Saturday then. Anybody who got anywhere near their time of last month is clearly on the up and should be pleased. I am especially pleased at the close finishing with the first 14 within 70 seconds of the winning time. Not bad handicapping given the conditions. Officials Kate W and Rob made it all possible.
…………………………Finishing time….Actual time…….Points

- Best of five races.
The series has a very worthy winner in Tony W who got through to 2nd and therefore substituted this for his 14th in May, having already dropped a 25th and a 17th – illustrating the value of doing as many races as possible, especially when there is a lean month for numbers and lower scores are easier. Tony B played his cards very well and takes a good Silver. Victoria fell at the last hurdle, her 43 points being overtaken by Tracey for Bronze (as predicted in view of her improving form) and equalled by Mel. Mentioned in dispatches for finishing 6th-17th in the championship are Ruari, Peter L and Ron, Arwel, Luke, Mat and Ruth, Bob, Diane, Mark, and Elen who also completed the series with at least 5 races. Fastest Man was Shaun in May with 18m04. Joe did 18m27 and Tony W 18m48. Fastest lady, once again after all these years, was Emma who did 22m19. Katy did 22m21. Alaw has a faster official time but apparently she got lost and missed a bit.

Weekly Report 28/9/19
Three Denbigh Harriers’ women made their mark on the Clwydian hills last night in the Moel y Plas race. This 4.8 mile race sets off from Graigfechan, up the road, onto the mountain, climbing steeply for over 1000ft up to the summit of Moel y Plas. The descent is a joyful dash in the dark… On-form Rhian Pierce battled with another female on the ascent but Rhian’s fast and skilful descent gained her 6th position overall out of 27 runners and First Female in an impressive time of 42 mins. 22secs. Katy Baugh, not far behind, had a storming run and was Third Female and 10th position overall in a time of 45 mins. 12 secs. Menai Baugh, thoroughly enjoying being back on the hills, finished in 19th position overall and 5th Female in a time of 51 mins. 36 secs.
Vicrtoria Whitehead competed in the EnduranceLife 15mile Trail Race in the North York Moors. This was a tough route with 2000ft of climbing, but with stunning views along the East coast, starting in Ravenscar. The recent rain made some of the paths very muddy & slippy but the rain held off for the race and was sunny. There was a good variety of terrain with coastal path to Robin Hood’s Bay, a beach section, fields, paths and plenty of mud ! Fantastic support along the route from Jon Whitehead helped as She had to dig deep in the final few miles uphil across open moorland. Victoria was pleased with 13th lady and 1st female vet in a time of 2:39.

Clearly this is the closest series ever! With one race to go and so many people having 5 races already (and so can drop a worst position) and nobody with a big lead, it will be down to a genuinely good run by someone to determine the winner.

Weekly report 21/9/19
Emma the only Denbigh Harrier who raced the Trailffest half marathon on Saturday. It was very scenic and extremely hot making it a tough race requiring perseverance. The Ffestiniog steam train transported runners and spectators in style to the start of the race at Tanygisiau giving plenty of time to enjoy the views and spot sections of the race route. Emma Collins finished 5th lady, 1st V50 in a field of 140 in a time of 2:08:26.
There were five Denbigh Harriers competing in the Llyn Alwen Trail & Canicross race over 11.5K. The race whilst starting in dry weather turned out to be a wet race for all concerned. Fred Jones led the Harriers home despite being the oldest Harrier competing with Carys Davies not far behind and relishing the hills. Ruth Crowther, Dawn Marshall and John Llewelyn Thomas had great runs on this challenging course with Ruth and John both having run a Parkrun the day before. Three Harriers, Roger Snaith, Katy Baugh and Stacey Hughes also supported the race by marshalling and sweeping.
Further afield in Australia Caroline and Rob Parry raced the Logan half marathon in very hot and humid conditions.
Both of them were happy with our times: Robert Parry 2:18:24 Caroline Ann Parry 2:44:03

Weekly Report 14/9/19
Sunday saw the inaugural North Wales Road Relays championships take place on Llandudno Prom. There were 63 teams representing 11 clubs taking part in the event with each team made up of three runners. Denbigh had 7 teams entered in different age categories with each runner running 4k. There were wonderful performances resulting in four medals for for the club. Having more than one Harrier team in the masters category race was an advantage as runners could work together to improve their times. The Female 50-59 category team of Emma Collins, Tracey Williams and Menai Baugh were comfortable gold medal winners. The Male 50-59 category team of David Baugh, Owen Conry and Mat Jones had a much tighter race eventually overtaking Abergele and Wrexham to win by 12 seconds. The Female 40-49 team of Mel Morris, Victoria Whitehead and Cary Davies were delighted to pick up a silver medal after a tight race. In the Senior and F35 category the young Harriers: Alaw Medi, Katy Baugh and Mari Williams brought home a bronze medal beating the much fancies Prestatyn team by a fine margin. This was a great team performance for the club that required some considerable organisation and training to make it a success. Special mention should go to Chris Baldwin for his organisational efforts and to Elen Baugh for her support on the day.

There were six Denbigh Harriers who competed in the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon on Sunday in a high class field with perfect conditions. Emma Collins who was first in her agog category and Mel Morris with a big personal best continued their strongest summer of running. The first Harrier home was Owen Conry in preparation for the Minneapolis Marathon in October. There was a strong run from Mat Jones and Bob Neale had a great time to finish high up in his age category. The August Denbigh Harriers Handicap race was well contested with the first 10 runners finishing with a minute. The course was slightly longer than previous races due to a course diversion so times were slower for everyone. John Llewelyn Thomas was the winner this month after putting on a sprint finish holding off the fast finishing Arwel Jones and Mel Morris. The fastest times on the night went to Tony Wood for the men and Mel Morris for the women. With only two races to go in the series there six or seven Harriers in with a chance of winning the series. Tony Wood and Victoria Whitehead are in strong positions with Ruari Benton Tony Benton, Luke Hughes, Bob Neale, and Arwel Jones in contention.
1st John Llewelyn Thomas 33:51
2nd Arwel Jones 25:13
3rd Melina Morris 22:48
Wednesday saw four Denbigh Harriers enjoy a beautiful sunny evening for the Caernarfon 10k. There was a light southwesterly breeze behind the runners for the final 4K with fantastic views of Snowdonia mountains and the Llyn Peninsular. There were two well deserved age category prizes for Duncan Jones in the M60 and Menai Baugh in the F60. This year the race was run clockwise with the hills at the beginning which many thought would be easier however everyone found the final flat 4K on the Menai straights hard work. A special mention should go to new member Carys Davies who ran the race in 51.29 having done the North Wales 1/2 marathon only three days before.

The penultimate one of the series – and weather-wise often the most favourable before autumn storms break and the ground gets muddy. A good one for the ‘improvers’ group to try if you have ideas about doing the Winter League Cross Country (which would be good!).
