Johnson’s Handicap Race 2016 Results

The best conditions for some time – no wind, about 8C and only just wet enough to make it interesting – and even a bit of sun! Brilliant job done by Duncan on the timing, and Jess on the finishing discs. Some remarkable performances and only three or four got lost. The apres-run “do” at Llanrhaeadr Chapel was excellent thanks to all the work done by Menai and Tracey the night before, and all the food prepared by participants.

Tony W was fastest but the big story is that Tracey defied the years (again) and got under 49 (just). She did do 47 something once before but that was with the aid of Freckle who really did make a difference getting her off the line (I know because I started alongside them) and so she was disqualified. In retrospect I think Menai’s run was in the same category as Tracey’s – scoring a personal best on a course that she designed 25 years ago. Welcome to Bethan and Ian as well – both with potential for the future. Of course the real needle match began at 10.27 am when Chris and Katy took to the road. Sadly, without Hannah and Mike who were supposed to be doing the pacemaking we were obliged to do all the work ourselves. Clearly with Katy’s finishing kick there was no option but to break her well before meaning that Chris went through his first time check over a minute faster than last year with Katy in very close attendance – and all looked good for Chris by halfway, reached at 50 minute pace,  until looking back we observed Ceri B dragging OAP Fred behind her. Tipyn o sioc! Bit late then to realise that we had destroyed each other. Not an easy trip back from there but the good news is that Katy did have to start her kick from too far back and Elen got in the way. Her fault. So a good day after all!

NB This 2016 course was about 15 seconds shorter than usual due to the fence erected by the High School between the bottom and top playing fields, forcing a return across the stream.

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 10-12-16

Three Denbigh Harriers ( Emma Collins – category win, Tony Benton and Vic Belshaw) travelled to Shropshire for the Cardington Cracker fell race. This was a lovely route over 9 miles with about 2,600′ of ascent. It was a very popular, race and attracted a big turnout and had a good atmosphere. Emma Collins won her age category.

There were four Denbigh Harriers at the Dash in the dark race in Llandegla with Tony Wood showing great form. There were good runs from Hannah Davies who was well up the field in the women’s race and Jon Whitehead who had a much improved performance. John Worthington completed the race for the first time in good shape.

10th Tony Wood 30.13

38th Hannah Davies 34.50

62nd Jon Whitehead 40.17

81st John Worthington 50.22

The Inter-regional Cross Country Championships were held in Brecon at the weekend. This was a long trip to make and Denbigh Harriers were well represented in the North Wales team with six of us running. The Men’s race (8.7K) was very fast from the off and Shaun Hughes was well up there with the front runners but fell back a bit in the later stages. David Baugh was more circumspect with his start but once into his running really enjoy the race and finished well. In the Ladies’ race (6K) Ceri Elen Diss had a stunning run coping well with the mud and finishing well up the field. She was followed by Ceri Belshaw and Katy Baugh in close succession. Menai Baugh was also worried about being at the back of the field but ended up overtaking quite a few runners on the second lap.

Men

52nd Shaun Hughes 34:59

98th David Baugh 38:40

Ladies

31st Ceri Diss 26:16

66th Ceri Belshaw 28:27

70th Katy Baugh 28:38

105th Menai Baugh 34:28

Johnson’s Age Group Best Performances

Updated for 2018: – To add some interest and in remembrance of great results in the past, these are the times to chase in future. Occasionally impenetrable fences appear and necessitate slight deviations as in 2009 and 2010 which probably added a minute to average times. On the other hand the latched gates are quicker than the old stiles, and going over the stream at the end is 15 seconds or so faster than going round the hedge (all races until 2017). All problems are just regarded as hazards of the course, so no complaints accepted!

I have included all people who have done sub 50 minutes, and very old people get recognised for suitably adjusted thresholds.

Senior Ladies: Rhian 46m44 (2010); Pauline 47m27 (2012); Ceri B 49m17 (2016); Tracey 49m19 (2002); Katy B 53m14 (2016); Elen B 56m58 (2018)

Most races sub 50: Women; Tracey, 4. Men; Chris, 10. Duncan may be 10 if sub 50 in 1992 and 1993 and 2000 which was quite likely but my full results only go from 2002. Tracey and Chris also have 3x sub 51.
