Denbigh 10K 9th April Results

One of the toughest road 10Ks. 350 ft of climb in the first 4 miles but the real problem is at 4.5 miles with what feels like a vertical climb out of the Afon Ystrad valley which follows half a mile of steep downhill (with one bit of steep climb just to break it up). Just over 200 people finished with almost an equal gender split (unusual). Not quite as many Harriers as expected for a local race, but several more people did the 5K – sadly incomprehensible results for that have been put up on the provisional results website.  The 10K results do seem accurate:

22nd Duncan ……..47m02 (3rd M50)

36th Rob G…………49m25

44th Chris…………..51m03 (2nd M60)

54th James…………52m41

118th Gwenan……..60m21 (2nd W50)

119th Helen D……..60m27

136th Lisa……………66m00

The next fairly local 10K is at Whitley near Frodsham on April 23rd – a lot flatter than this one.

The 5K  results are now complete:

2nd ShaunH ……….18m51

7th Bob……………….25m27 (1st M60)

11th Gwenno W…..27m52 (2nd Woman)

12th David Sp………27m56 (3rd M40)

26th Gwenno E…….33m53

27th Nicola………….33m54

28th Ron…………….34m13 (1st M70)

62 finishers

Conwy Fell Race

This was the first running of the Conwy Fell Race. The course had been altered for safety reasons meaning that the rock climbing section was missing. It was a testing little 8k (5 mile) course with 555m (1820″) of climbing. Nice dry and warm conditions for the race. Great views and some lovely paths apart from a very nasty sting in the tail of the race. Good soup and prizes in the Pub afterwards for the seven Denbigh Harriers who took part: Victoria Whitehead (1st F40), Jon Whitehead, Ceri Belshaw (3rd Woman), Vic Belshaw, Menai Baugh (2nd F50) and David Baugh (2nd M50).

March 2017 Handicap Results

Astonishing numbers turned up to start this season’s first handicap race in the worst weather of the year (so far!). I didn’t really expect more than a dozen hardy souls (betting on four being of the Baugh persuasion) and was even more surprised to catch a first glimpse of the bionic version of Duncan. Only a glimpse, mind, because having expected him to be completely crocked and out of condition post-operatively, he had a fairly generous starting time. Shades of the past then as he not only missed that start – setting off about a minute late – but he cruised through and finished well clear and untroubled. No more leeway for the Duncan in this handicap system! Alternative Fact.

……………………………..Finishing time…..Actual time

1st Duncan……………..10.36.23am…………25m00 (roughly)

2nd Tony W……………10.36.47am…………20m47 (accurate)

3rd Tony B…………………36.59………………22m59

4th David B………………..37.11……………….21m41

5th Sioned………………….37.15……………….27m15 (approx)

6th Gerwyn………………..37.46……………….23m30 (approx)

7th Ceri B…………………..37.52……………….23m52 (accurate)

8th Dan…………………….37.56………………..21m56

9th Vic………………………37.58………………..21m58

10th Jon……………………38.00……………….27m00

11th Anwen……………….38.18………………..28m18 (approx)

12th Victoria……………..38.20……………….24m50

13th Elen…………………..38.29……………….26m59

14th Menai………………..38.58……………….28m58

15th Llyr……………………39.10……………….26m40

16th Katy B………………..39.16……………….27m16 (approx)

17th Fred…………………..39.20……………….25m20

18th Gwennan……………39.29……………….31m59

19th Ian…………………….39.33……………….27m03

20th Rob G……………….39.44………………..29m14

21st Roger…………………39.56………………..31m56

22nd Bethan……………..40.11…………………29m11

23rd Bronwen…………….40.52……………….38m52

24th Ruth………………….40.57………………..36m30 (approx)

25th Diane…………………41.08………………..39m08

The missing number 8 seems to have been just a miscount. My memory is that Dan was just in front of Vic? Very good run by Gerwyn after being set off over a minute late. The start was indeed a bit of a shambles. Katy was pondering the bottom of the stream when her name was called – but this might genuinely have been the first time that Elen was faster than her sister. Never mind, Katy – I might have been running too (and I do note your 23m31 Parkrun yesterday). In the conditions Tony W ran a brilliant race and might well get under 19 minutes by mid-summer. David B ran sub 20 yesterday in the parkrun and this was even better! Sioned was another late starter motoring through – with almost the same time as Jon who had possibly his best performance ever.

Next race TUESDAY evening April 11th at 6.30pm

Harriers Weekly Report 26-2-17

Three Denbigh Harriers the Village Bakery Half Marathon with Shaun Hughes continuing his fine form to finish in 84th and a PB in this competitive field of nearly 1400 runners. Martin Cortvriend is becoming a bit of a Half Marathon specialist and his fine time took him to first spot in his age category and third place in the GB ranking for the year. Mei Emrys had a fine run to get a personal best at the distance.

84th Shaun Hughes 1.21.40, 313 Martin Cortvriend 1.34.37 (1st Vet 65), 960th Mei Emrys 2.02.20

The Rhyl 10 mile race was run in the very blustery midst of storm Ewan so the performances of the four Denbigh Harriers present were heartening and special mention must go to Shaun Hughes and Mei Emrys who ran twice at the weekend. Shaun’s 11th place was very impressive in this field of 300+ runners.

11th Shaun Hughes 1.04.40, 122nd Mei Emrys 1.27.40, 246th Dawn Marshall 1.46.34, 301st Wendy Malcolm 2.04.07

The Ruthin 5K had four Denbigh Harriers running in it with the star performance coming from 78 year old Ron Birch winning his age category and out running 48 younger runners.

4th David Baugh 19:40 (1st Vet 50), 7th Paul Goffey 21:16, 38th Emma Jones 30:00, 43rd Ron Birch 32:16 (1st Vet 70)

In the Ruthin 10K there was a problem with the course length meaning that the runners ran somewhere between 200 and 300 metres more than 10k meaning that any times difficult to compare. This said Shaun Hughes again showed great strength to finish in third after running a 10 mile race the day before. There were superb runs from new members Lisa Dafydd and Nicola Field.

3rd Shaun Hughes 39:26,  56th Robert Gotts 50:49, 60th Katy Baugh 51:18, 84th Mei Emrys 56:15, 145th LisaDafydd 1:03:35, 151st HelenDavies 1:04:17152, 163rd Nicola Field 1:07:19, 164th Nathan Field 1:07:19

In the New York Central Park Half Marathon at the weekend Victoria and Jon Whitehead tackled the undulating course 18 hours after landing. Victoria was 9th in her age group in a field of 1400 runners.

276th Victoria Whitehead 1.46.20, 744th Jon Whitehead 2.04.42

Ras Barchud Coch – trail running in Y Gwyllt – April 29th

Last year we had an expedition to the hinterland of Aberystwyth and ran the UK trail championships (short course) over 13.1 miles with 3000 ft of climb. Not easy. There is a 10K race as well which starts at the same time and has a little less climb.

Do people want to go to this as a club outing this year?

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 13-2-17

The popular Moel y Ci fell race took place in cold and slippery conditions which made the 5 miles and 951 foot of climbing more challenging than usual for the three Denbigh Harriers who ventured out. Tony Wood a newcomer to the fells, enjoyed this outing and was the first Denbigh Harrier home. There was a close contest between Ceri Belshaw and Emma Collins with Ceri finishing two places ahead of Emma and Emma winning her age category by some margin.

42nd Tony Wood 49.04, 82nd Ceri Belshaw 54.46, 84th Emma Collins 55.08 (1st W50)

There were only two Denbigh Harriers running the Nick Beer 10k in Llandudno in fairly fierce conditions that included waves crashing onto the prom near the finish Despite the battering both Sioned Griffiths and Caroline Parry achieved personal bests for the distance.

344th Sioned Griffiths 52.44 (PB), 391st Caroline Parry 54.41 (PB)

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 4-2-17

Saturday saw the last fixture of the of the North Wales Cross Country season in Oswestry on a good varied course comprising of hills, fences to climb over, boggy sections and the occasional stream to cross. In the Women’s race over 5.4kCeri Diss ran exceptionally well to finish in 14th place and as the first W50. Next saw the welcome return of Ceri Belshaw in 27th place and behind her there was an good battle between Tracey Williams and Victoria Whitehead returning from Injury and illness respectively. Victoria won on the day finishing in 33rd place one place ahead of Tracey. Tracey had another victory on the day by winning the W50 category for the season. The ladies team finished in 4th place in league one a handful of points for the season behind the bronze position.

In the Men’s race over 10k the first Denbigh Harrier home was Joe Welch in an impressive 36th place but due to eligibility issues his result was recorded for Nanatglyn as was Gerwyn Lloyd’s 117th place. Glen Price had a good run to finish well up the field in 57th place with Tony Wood running into a strong 63rd place. Club rivalry was renewed between David Baugh and Tom Jones next with Tom sprinting to a 74th place two ahead of David. Owen Conry in the midst of marathon training came in 90th place with Llyr Jones completing the team placings with t a strong finish. The men finished third in division two with a score that would have had them well ahead of many teams in division one providing a potential good season next year.

14th Ceri Diss 25-07, 27th Ceri Belshaw 26-16, 33rd Victoria Whitehead 27-10, 34th Tracy Williams 27-13, 56th Katy Baugh 29-50, 58th Elen Baugh 30-05 ,75th Menai Baugh 32-24, 90th Nicola Field 38-57

Noel Morris Memorial Handicap 2017

Disconcertingly, this summer series of races starts on the first Sunday in March when the weather isn’t usually much like summer. Last year we had a course up on the Graig and it snowed, but this year it will be back to a variation of the old course between the High School Fields and Ystrad bridge. Quite likely the curious fence in the playing fields will force us to go through the stream both on the way out and on the way back which will add variety. I’m hoping that our IT wizards might put up a map of the course on facebook?

Handicap Route

Handicap Route

Sunday March 5th at 10am on the Leisure Centre fields is the time and place. With all the new members, the handicapping may be a trifle erratic for the first one but all the usual sleights of hand and bias against Tony B (he always complains but keeps on turning up) will reappear given one or two races. Obviously if your name doesn’t appear below and you want to run, please scream on facebook. Those of you running with the Intermediate group on Monday nights should be interested, I hope.

Oswestry and End of 2016/17 Season Results

Probably the nicest weather for the last race of a cross country season for a very long time. The ground was pretty dry despite recent rain (recent years have seen varying degrees of quagmire) except for the occasional patch of mud. There was sun and not that much wind so altogether the racing was disconcertingly fast considering that this course is the longest we do at 6 miles for the men and rather more than 3.5 for the women. That is my excuse for dropping out after only half a mile but even by then it was clear that Llyr would do a better job of completing the rather depleted Men’s team. A factor in that depletion was the referee’s decision to disallow our new recruits Joe W and Gerwyn who originally began the season running for “Nantglyn”, although that club never officially existed! However, I predict that they will make an impact next year.

Of the official team, in the absence of Shaun – who had been forced down the salt-mines for the day by the exploitative capitalist system (i.e. he was at work) – we had Glen looking very cool in his sunglasses but still just about able to fumble his way over the fence ahead of the totally extravagant style of a leaping Tony W (see facebook pics). The two were up there with quite a bunch all the way round and Tony (63rd) needed to save his energy a bit for that final kick in which Glen (57th) kept him, and the others, at bay. Another duo getting used to being pretty close throughout races was that of Tom (74th) and David (76th). David pushed very hard all the way but couldn’t quite get right up with Tom to be able to sit-in comfortably because every time he got close Tom put in that little extra again. In comparison, Owen (90th) ploughed a lonely furrow, a little further back from these two than he had been at Baschurch, but he still managed to move up steadily after a sensible start. Which left Llyr (127th) to run his best race yet as 6th counter and bring the team home in 3rd place on the day in Division 2, and 3rd overall for the series. The first two clubs gain promotion so we ought to be looking to win this Division next year.

At the start of the day the women were hoping to get into bronze medal position in the series, needing to beat Buckley by just 6 points to accomplish this. It didn’t quite happen despite a great effort by Ceri D (14th) who handled the early pace well enough to be the one hunting down those in front rather than having to hang on grimly. Namesake Ceri B (27th) looked very focused (sometimes I suggest that her concentration drifts) and that was certainly needed because her final half mile was all about hanging on – resulting in a photo finish with the girl in front. Neither Victoria (33rd) nor Tracey (34th) have had the best of health in the last few weeks so their cautious starts in about 50th were understandable in the circumstances. Last year they were more usually starting around 30th and moving up to the teens or early 20s, which is partly an indication of the improvement in standard which seems to be taking place in the women’s event but does show that they haven’t been quite so lucky with illness this season. Normally Katy (56th) might have been able to take advantage of them being below par but she has done a lot of racing this year and looked tired – clearly struggling to stay ahead of her sister Elen (58th) who should take a lot of confidence from getting so close. Menai (75th) was only 2 minutes further back which is a considerable achievement remembering how fast Katy and Elen are over shorter distances, both probably able to get a gap of 2 minutes in just 1 mile, let alone 3.5 miles. On her first outing over the country was Nicola (90th) who looked happy enough but obviously found that shortish cross country is more of a cardio-respiratory challenge than the half-marathons she has done before. If she keeps up this effort I predict that Nicola will see a lot of improvement both on road and country in the next few months.
