June Handicap Results
Bright and cheerful this evening in sunshine and 17C without wind, unlike at the weekend when so many of the people running and spectating here were engaged in really serious competition in wind and rain. But another day, another race. The series is starting to unfold and Tony W is bent on securing that Fastest Man trophy with another record run! Glad to see more new members taking part, and some older ones like Colin and Ruth coming back. Many thanks to Duncan for officiating along with Wendy, Jon, and Martin. Good to see the clock in action and thanks to club chairman, Roger, for sorting it out – and then winning the race.

Welsh Castles Relay 2017 Results
With so many new members recently the club has really blossomed and is ready to take on the bigger battalions in National events. Interesting, from the point of the sport, that other clubs are getting younger people on board too. The WCR has a long (35 year) history now and although the twenty legs change to a minor degree, they remain very long and mostly very hilly which mean that the time differences between the winner of a stage and the last person can be huge. This year the organisers said in their handbook that they wanted competitors who were able to maintain at least 9 minute mile pace whatever the terrain. The actual cut-off times applied were at 9m30 pace.
We had eleven team members who were new to the Castles and several older ones with lots of experience. The Sunday stages are inevitably more difficult to arrange and support so far from home and a degree of resilience is required to get oneself to the start despite heavy traffic – and even more important to get somebody to pick one up afterwards! Particular thanks here go to Tony W for staying overnight in Newtown in order to be able to start at 7 am, and Caroline and Rob for doing the same at the last minute to do stages 10 and 13. Caroline had the hardest leg of all and was not well, but kept the team going with a determined start and and an orderly withdrawal. She went on as driver for Rob and we were glad to see both of them in one piece at Builth. The Cardiff end is also tricky and Llyr and Kelley stayed overnight on Saturday to do stage 19 which ends in a field nowhere near the shindig going on in Bute Park at the final finish. Thanks also to Sioned who had a lonely trip to Llanfair Caereinion on Saturday and everybody was so wet by then that they had gone home and she didn’t get the huge cheering from followers that I remember getting in 2014.
Thanks hugely as well to Marshals Gwenan, Helen, Kate, Jon F, Duncan, Fred, Fred’s brother, and of course Peter E who did all the admin and as Team Manager had to be at the Race Organiser’s meeting in Caernarfon at 8.30am on that very wet Saturday.

June Handicap Start List
The points competition will become clearer after this one. Some adjustments to the start list reflect remarkable improvements being made by new members, and interesting progress by some old ones too! The tactical decisions about how much effort to put in to get to the gates in front of a group might loom large – and cost a bit on the final sprint if you get it wrong…..

A record turnout by a long way – 33 runners and at least half a dozen spectators! Perfect goldilocks weather -12 degrees C and little wind. It was terrifying standing on the finishing line facing the charging masses coming down at us. Some very classy performances – analysis to come.

Many thanks to all who have signed for the Castles – I’ve got 16 of the proposed team and several reserves. Please email your addresses to Peter E as requested on facebook. Still looking good after a bit of a setback last week. Thank you for all your support.

North Wales 5K championships
The 5K at Ffrith Beach, hosted by Prestatyn RC, used the same course as last year along the promenade and back – and like last year there was a troublesome headwind on the way back. It was a bigger race this year, favoured with bright sunshine. Ceri Diss successfully defended her W50 title with a very fast time of 20m10 in 39th place which would have been good enough for Bronze in the M50 category. Fred Jones also shone brightly, winning M60 Silver in overall 61st place. Four new members from the ‘couch to 5K’ group produced really good performances with Sali Powell starting very fast and finishing 85th, while Sian Pritchard was closing on her all the way to finish 89th. Rhian Wyn Jones looked comfortable finishing 97th and Nicola Davies stayed ahead of a chasing group in 102nd.

Noel Morris Memorial Handicap – April Results
Those expecting a nice warm evening like us officials were disappointed. Very cold in the north westerly wind despite the bright sunshine. It has been dry most of the last week but some managed to find heavy mud due to ploughing, and Elen liked it so much she kicked her shoes off just to get more of it between her toes. Congratulations to Diane who improved from last in March to first tonight!Welcome to Sally who set off on her own bravely with no idea where she was going and got close to the time of several very decent runners. Also commiserations to Mike Hb who suffered a pulled muscle in the cold. Brilliant return by Shaun J, and excellent run by Helen (after Sunday’s quick 10K too) but a clear new Men’s record by Tony W – I am continuing the records of the course we used from 2012 -2015 despite the short cut over the stream which I’m regarding as worth 30 seconds or so. John Morris held the previous record of 19m23 in April 2014. Vic did 19m48 in 2013. Emma holds the women’s record with 21m24 in June 2013. Rhian did 21m25 in August 2013. In that context, Katy’s 22m43 today represents her entry into the reckoning as a proper cross country runner!
