Harriers take category places at North Wales 5k Championships

Five Harriers turned out for the Ffrith 5k which was also a North Wales 5k Championship race. It was a beautiful sunny morning but there was a strong head wind after the turn around point. Philip Hayes was first Harrier home in 36th and 20:18, just missing out on a VM35 podium position but getting ever closer to his sub-20 target, smashing his recent parkrun PB by 8 seconds. He was followed by Tony Benton, 56th 21:26, running strongly, only one second slower than the last time he ran it 3 years ago and also finishing 4th in his VM55 category. Fred Jones ran a very competitive run to place 65th overall and was third VM60 in the North Wales Championships. Melina Morris was running her first ever 5k and secured second FV45 in the North Wales Championships coming in 73rd in 22:51. Menai Baugh, though last Harrier in, securing overall first position in her FV60 age category. 96th in 25:26, her fastest 5k time in 5 years.

Success continues to run through the Baugh family with Elen Baugh completing her first half marathon this week just a few weeks after sister Katy’s marathon debut. Elen ran the Leeds Half Marathon in 1:54:28..

Also competing this weekend over the half marathon distance were Rob & Caroline Parry, running in one of their favourite races, the ‘Road to the Isles’ Half Marathon in the Western Highlands of Scotland, quite a hilly route, with approximately 900 feet of ascent. Conditions on the day were sunny, resulting in quite a bit of sunburn for both, and surprisingly warm with minimal wind. Both having been racing heavily this year as Caroline trains for her first half ironman, Rob completed the course in 2:19:05, Caroline. 2:34:59.

We round up the week with Parkrun. Sian Pritchard took to the starting line up at Bushy, finishing the course in 27:27, whilst Duncan Jones ran Shrewsbury finishing strongly in 22:20.

Half marathon win for Shaun Hughes as Mari Jones wins the her first race

First race of the week was the club Handicap on Tuesday night where the weather was definitely improving in that it didn’t rain properly to add to the degree of mud on the course, although the wind and cloud made the temperature barely in double figures. It was remarkable how many of those with recent long races in their legs still managed to get close to their handicaps and it was tight with an avalanche of people coming down the finishing straight with positions changing in the last few metres.

Congratulations to new runner Mari Jones for a marvellous improvement (5 minutes faster than last month), and to Rob Parry who’s fast half marathon at Chester two days previously should have flattened him more than it did. Also faring well after a long weekend race was Menai Baugh coming in 30 seconds faster than predicted. Ron Birch, 79 years young, brought the runners in.

Just 3 Harriers racing out on the fells this weekend, as many of our fell runners were out on training runs for the Vegan 3000s. Jon Fleming raced in the heat at Ras y Moelwyn on Saturday finishing just under 2 hours and 43rd out of a field of 97.

In Shropshire on Sunday, Emma Collins and Vic Belshaw raced the South Mynd Tour, an AL fell race of 14.5 miles with 3500 ft elevation and plenty of route choices, making for a bit of sport. There was a small field of 39, with Emma and Vic finished mid field in 19th 3:01:44 and 22nd 3:01:56 respectively. A lovely though hot race with stunning scenery saw Emma win her category VF55 and Vic place 3rd in his VM55.

The heat continued on Sunday with 5 Harriers turn out in what was already a scorcher, even at the 10am start, for the annual 2 Lakes Trail Half and 10k. The routes are a scenic combination of tracks, paths and climbs well above the 300m contour throughout and taking in the 2 reservoirs of Alwen and Brenig. The heat made them both even tougher races.

In the half  Shaun Hughes continued his scorching form; winning in a time of 1.27.04 with club mate Tony Wood not far behind in 5th, 3rd SM and a time of 1.40.03 Mel Morris still with the London marathon and Tuesday’s handicap in her legs came in as 5th VF40, 10th female, and 27th overall in a time of 2.03.09.

In the 10k the Harriers shone with Duncan Jones, in his first race back from injury, coming in 3rd overall, 2nd Male and 1st VM50 in a time of 50:30. Hot on his heels was Fred Jones who came in 3rd Male and first VM60 in a time of 50:57.
Also on Sunday 8 harriers made the short journey over the horseshoe pass to take part in the Bespoke Llangollen Trail 10km where the temperatures were no cooler than round the Brenig & Alwen. First harrier home was Sali Powell in an excellent time of 56.44, followed by Roger Snaith in 1.02.02 Hannah McDonnell 1.03.19. Also on the course were Lisa Dafydd 1.04.13 Nicola Field 1.06.16 Nicola Williams 1.09.53 Kathryn Snaith 1.11.00 Sharon Griffiths 1.11.01. Fantastic times for all our runners on this tough course.

We round up the week with Parkrun. PBs galore at Conwy with Phil Hayes getting a PB of 20:26 after his half marathon PB at Chester last week. Sarah Bayliss, returning strongly from injury, also PB’d with a time of 25:15 and not far behind was Jeff Jones also with a PB of 28:26. They were joined at Conwy by Vic Belshaw 6th in 19:39 and Bob Neale in 28:15. Tony Benton took third at Bere Island and sisters Katy & Elen Baugh raced Woodhouse Park, Elen, 24:15, just behind her PB with Katy, Wepre, 29:20 as she recovers from her first marathon at London 2 weeks ago.

The weather is definitely improving in that it didn’t rain properly to add to the degree of mud on the course, although the wind and cloud made the temperature barely in double figures. So  still cold for those of us who keep meeting every month as officials. Dawn is specialising in handing out the finishing discs – an essential job when there was an avalanche of people coming down the finishing straight with positions changing in the last few metres. Club Chairman Roger did his best to set up the Club Clock, but we were let down by a failing battery. It was remarkable how many of those with recent long races in their legs still managed to get close to (my) expectations of them. Hence the close results, which belied the protestations of those believing themselves hard-done-by (Victoria and Birthday Boy, Duncan, as usual, but at least Tony B wasn’t there to add to the pre-race chorus of dismay!). Check their positions to see how valid were their demands for an extra minute!

Congratulations to Mari for a marvellous improvement (5 minutes faster than last month), and to Rob P – I thought his fast HM two days ago would have flattened him more than it did – as well as Menai, who had one extra Peak from Sunday in her legs than I thought likely and still managed 30 seconds faster than predicted. For the first time in my hearing, Ron complained after the race about the effects of age and I’m sure that all will agree that he deserves a better start next time.

PB’s a plenty for the Harriers this weekend

On Saturday, the toughest race of the weekend saw 3 Harriers heading for the 3 Peaks fell race joining 800 runners for the 23.5 mile race dubbed the marathon with mountains in the Yorkshire Dales. The race climbs Yorkshires three highest peaks: Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. the race has strict and challenging cut-offs in three places which pulls runners out of the race if they fail to reach the cut-off point in time – an extra pressure. Victoria Whitehead running her furthest distance to date had a superb run to finish in 4 hours 54 minutes, David Baugh suffering from a lack of training and longest run of only 13 miles this year completed the race in 5 hours 6 minutes.  Menai Baugh had a great run going through two of the three cut-offs to run 16.6 miles in 3 hours 52 minutes.

Also on Saturday andt the second counter in the North Wales 2018 Fell Series, five Harriers turned out on our local hills for this well established race. A great result for Ceri Belshaw saw her first lady home. Ceri also took a minute out of the ladies course record set by herself in 2017 coming in 23rd in 49:11. Emma Collins comfortably took the ladies over 50 category and 31st 53:42. The mens over 50 category was fiercely contested between four competitors with the lead switching several times and all finishing within 43 seconds of each other. Vic Belshaw took the lead on the summit of Moel Famau but was pushed back to third on the final run in but with encouragement from fellow Harrier Tony Wood 18th 45:19, Vic managed to take second place on a sprint finish and finish 17th overall 45:16. Our fifth Harrier taking to the hills for his first fell race of 2018 was Tony Benton 36th 54:49. Emma and Vic are leading their respective age categories in the series after two races.

Over in Chester on Sunday, there were perfect conditions for the Chester Half Marathon which saw 17 Harriers out on the course. After the unseasonable hot race at London last week, Shaun Hughes and Joe Welch were both back out racing, Shaun finishing in 1:19:31 a few minutes off his PB but well ahead of his target of 1hr 25 for the race. Joe was further back in 1:48:34 and running with a friend.

The big story of the day are the sheer number of PB’s and first time running a half marathon though. PB’s achieved include Phil Hayes 1:35:11 taking 1:14 off his previous best, Hywel Roberts 1:42:38 1:40 improvement, Paul Goffey 1:42:48, first half in 4 years 1:41 off his previous best, Alaw Evans 1:46:55 taking a whopping 5 minutes of her previous best, Rob Parry 2:02:11 course PB, Sian Pritchard 2:06:19 also taking a whopping 5 mins off her previous best and Lisa Dafydd 2:12:30, 59secs improvement.

Joining them were a number of first time runners with Claire Spencer 2:11:08, Ceri Boyd 2:18:49 and Angharad Gilbert 2:24:39 all in their first race at this distance. Elsewhere on course and not far off their PB’s were Ian Jones 1:50:34, Dan Schraibman 1:52:31, David Spencer 2:02:09, Kath Evans 2:08:27 and Caroline Parry 2:11:35 following a 40 mile bike ride the day before as she trains for a half ironman.

At parkruun this weekend , over at Rosliston (Derbyshire), Martin Cortvriend was 23rd over the finish line, in a time of 23:57. In Conwy, Julie Roberts managed to break the 30 minute barrier again, with 29:55. At the notoriously hilly Wepre course, Sarah Bayliss ran 5 seconds off her PB 28:02, and was second lady.

Midweek there were four Harriers in disguise in the last of the Borders league series at Deeside (five races out of six to count) running for their second claim clubs. Emma Collins showed further improvement and comfortably won the series ladies V55 Category with a time of 33:23; Tony Benton pulled off another strong run in 32:27; Vic Belshaw made it home in 29:12 securing second place in the series men’s V55 category; and Craig Jones had a very fast run, beating his 5k PB whilst on the 4.65m course, in 27:48.

1st sub 3 hour marathon for Joseph Welch whilst Shaun Hughes finishes in top 500 at London

With athletics hitting the headlines this weekend with the 2018 London Marathon, 7 Denbigh Harriers made the journey to the capital to compete with a world-class field. And regular readers of this report will already know Shaun Hughes lined up on that elite start line too having achieved qualification for the elite race with a previous sub 2hr 45 marathon, the qualifying time as a senior man. Joseph Welch, also joined him on the elite start line having previously achieved a ‘Good for Age’ qualification time.

Members Steve Gadd, Melina Morris, Katy Baugh, Billie-Jo Davies and Hawys Roberts also lined up in soaring temperatures – even harder after a winter of very cold training – with over 40,000 runners, racing in what was a first marathon and fundraiser for many.

It comes as no surprise then that Shaun Hughes was first Harrier home, completing the race in 2:48:48 and placing 378th in the race, 267th in his age category. Such a fantastic achievement for Shaun who’s only 23 and never raced in London before but has such a sensible head and knows how to train and race. He’s already looking forward to next year, citing the event as “a great experience with the crowd and support making it all worthwhile”. There continues to be a bright future for this young man.

Joining Shaun as one of the first 1000 runners home was Joe Welch. Joe, 38, in his 9th marathon only had one goal yesterday – to run sub 3 hours, a goal he’s been working on since Christmas 2015. After getting very close before, Joe was ready to admit defeat when wife, Jen, bought him a running book and more importantly told him she believed in him when he confessed he didn’t think he’d ever run sub 3.

Joe’s run London 3 times before, the last time in 2007, finishing then in 3 hours 22. In spite of the heat, all those early morning training runs round the roads of Nantglyn paid off with Joe not just stealing a sub 3 hour time, he smashed his target and previous PB by 6 mins finishing in 2:55:40 to place 711th in the race and 480th in his category. Sometimes it’s the belief of others in you that lead you to greatness.

But the spirit of London is not just about the elite runners, it’s everyone who lines up in a club vest, charity vest, or just looking to see if they can race London. Coming 3rd home for the club was Steve Gadd finishing in the top 10% of runners in 3517th and 3:24:25, another incredible time and achievement for Steve.

Next came our ladies – Melina Morris, Katy Baugh, Billie-Jo Davies and Hawys Roberts who we’ve talked about again before as we’ve followed their progress as they’ve trained for their first marathon, often training and racing together benefitting from that support and knowing someone else in their position. All these ladies were also fundraising and to date have raised nearly £10,000 for local and national charities.

Mel was first home in 4:29:14 15737th and 596th in her category. Katy, who won Denbigh Harriers club place to compete at London, finished in 4:42:17, 18743th overall and 2908th in her category. She was followed closely by Billie-Jo Davies in 4:47:17 19949th and 3174th in the category. Hawys Roberts, who only started running 6 months ago, finished in 5:37:59, 30826th and 5885th in her category. The achievements of all our Harriers in London cannot be underestimated given the heat, pressure and the crowd support, a big well done to them all.

Sunday also saw a long-distance local race take place on the Clwydian Hills. At distances of 20 and 10 miles, with nearly 5000ft and over 2500ft ascent respectively, this was a no less daunting race than London. In the 20 mile race both the female and male races were hotly contested with Ceri Belshaw pipped to post and taking 2nd place by 1 minute in 3:51:13. Ceri was 6th overall and beat the 3rd lady by nearly 30 minutes. 2nd overall and pipped to the first place by 2 mins 30 seconds was Tony Wood in 3:19:58, over 20 minutes ahead of the 3rd man.

In the Clwydian 10 mile, Jon Fleming was 6th overall in 1:35:50, Sioned Griffiths 23rd and 3rd Open Lady in 1:59:16. 28th was Anwen Brown 2:05:56 with Kate Wilson 2:11:21 and Llyr Jones 2:12:33, 35th and 36th respectively following closely behind. Vicky Cortvriend took 2nd VF60 in 63rd and 2:54:58.

3 fell races and parkrun complete the races for the week. On Tuesday, two Harriers turned out for the Joe Brown Midweek Fell Series at St. David’s College on a sunny and mild Spring evening. The 3.5 mile course ascended  771ft through woods to a small hill behind Llandudno with a steep, fast descent to the finish. Victoria Whitehead finished 2nd F40 in 59th out of 125 runners in a time of 33:50 and Menai Baugh continues her category wins finishing 1st F60 93rd 38:36.

On Wednesday, Vic Belshaw ventured over the border to Keswick for the Lords Seat Evening Fell Race hosted by the prestigious Keswick AC competing against some of the UK’s best fell running clubs on a glorious evening. In a fast and furious 5 mile race with 1,500ft of ascent taking in the tops of Barf and Lords Seat, ever modest Vic managed to take the vet over 50 category but what a battle with the lead changing several times  – the next five V50s came within 60s of his finishing time of 41:06.

On Saturday 2 Harriers raced at Moel Wnion Fell Race with both securing age category wins for Denbigh in the ladies and men’s over 50 category today. To say it was hot ascending Moel Wnion would have been an understatement but a lovely atmosphere, a very friendly race and a scenic course over 4.7 miles with 1,772ft of ascent saw Vic Belshaw storm home in 7th and second category win of the week as 1st M50 with Emma Collins in 29th and 1st F50.

Harriers were on course at 4 parkruns this weekend. In London to support daughter Katy in the marathon, David and Menai Baugh ran very creditable times of 20:26 and 26:01 respectively at Burgess both finishing 57th in their gender. In both cases, a Parkrun PB. Elsewhere in the South East, Sian Pritchard did Kingston Parkrun in 28 minutes dead on. At Chester, Paul Goffey was 15 seconds away from his PB with 22:32, finishing in 30th place. Whilst closer to home at Conwy, Philip Hayes was 17th over the finish line with a time of 20:59 in his first race since the Paris marathon. Julie Roberts showed improvement from a month ago, taking nearly a minute from the last time she ran with a finish time of 29:51.

Ladies Day for the Denbigh Harriers at Moel Lus

It was ladies first at Moel Lus on Tuesday night in the latest Joe Brown Midweek Fell Series as nine Denbigh Harriers raced in Dwygyfylchi. This long-established fell race is one of the best short fell races, climbing an unrelenting steep 900 foot hill for a mile and a half at the start of the race, followed by a two mile undulating run down to the finish. The temperature was cool and the mountain was shrouded in thick cloud. Out of 132 runners Tony Wood was first Harrier home in 24th in 26:54, once again showing his strength on the fells. Next it was a trio of our fastest men with Vic Belshaw 33th 28:28 just 13 seconds short of winning his age category, then David Baugh 49th 30:52, just managing to hold off Jon Fleming 50th 31:09.

But it was all about the ladies led in by Victoria Whitehead 63rd and 32:41 securing her first prize in the F40 age category. Emma Collins also secured first prize in her F50 age category 70th 33 :13. Sioned Griffiths, returning from injury, had a great race finishing in 101th 36:52 and hotly pursued by Menai Baugh 102nd 37:01 also securing her first prize in her F60 age category. Anwen Brown finished in 113th 39:46 after taking a tumble on the descent.

Also mid-week, Shaun Hughes finished his training for the London marathon with 13th place at Chester Spring 5 mile race in a time of 27:52, leaving him well-trained and ready to take his place on the elite race starting line this Sunday in London.

Parkrun tourism again this weekend with Martin & Vicky Cortvriend continuing their Italian tour with Palermo parkrun. Vicky was 1st lady home and 16th overall 34:57, Martin came 11th 27:39. At home, Sarah Bayliss ran her 2nd consecutive PB 27:59 at Wepre as continues to return even stronger from injury. At Conwy Tony Benton was 43rd 21:52, in Leeds Elen Baugh 24:51and at Bushy Park Sian Pritchard ran 27:42.

Roads, XC and fells, at home and away, result in great personal achievements for Harriers

The weather of late hasn’t been the most favourable for any kind of training let alone spring marathons but that didn’t deter Dan Jones, Gareth Edwards or Philip Hayes from taking up the starting line. Dan & Gareth lined up in Manchester for the Greater Manchester Marathon, with for Dan a target of a PB set following his first marathon last October at Chester. In a well-paced race with great conditions and support, a PB was more than achieved – 8 minutes off his last race, Dan completed the marathon in 3:09:46. Gareth had a fantastic run too, building on his recent 20 mile race at Wrexham, to complete Greater Manchester in 4:11:41.

Further afield in sunny climates with little time to acclimatise and a tough race being made tougher by the heat, Phil Hayes finished the Paris Marathon in a time of 3hr 46mins and a PB.

Parkrun races this week were also home and away. Heavy rain and a muddy course made Wepre for something more akin to a fell race given its climbs – it’s already one of the UK’s toughest Park Runs. Vic Belshaw took 2nd in 21:39, with daughter Ceri coming in 12th in 25:20. Sarah Bayliss made up the trio of Harriers with a new course PB of 28:12.

Just down the road in Conwy, another father and daughter raced with David Baugh 27th in 20:55 with Elen 76th and 12th lady in 24:04. Over in Etna, Italy and another parkrun more akin to a fell race, Martin Cortvriend took 4th 24:00 with Vicky Cortvriend 15th and 5th lady in 37:02

Earlier in the week, many of the weekends racers were on other courses. David Baugh was out  running the Joe Brown’s Midweek Fell Series race in Abergwyngregyn on Tuesday evening, this time with wife Menai. David decided to make things harder than necessary, accidentally starting at the back of the field, before overtaking whilst working his way up the 2.5 mile uphill before thoroughly enjoying the 2 mile fast downhill, finishing 38th out of 103 runners in 37.30. Meanwhile Menai ran uphill strongly and stormed downhill to finish in 83rd position in a time of 46.53 – winning first prize in her age category.

Back in Denbigh, it was the first race of the Noel Morris Handicap Summer Series. This race pits club members against themselves, the handicapper and each other across a series of monthly races with the culmination of the best 5 performances for each runner leading to their final score and place in the series. This first race is always hardest for the handicapper, with winter training performance not always offering the best insight into performance on the day. The race was won by Tony Benton 23:27, stealing the race 50 metres from the line from Anwen Brown 28:06 coming back from injury and just ahead of Kate Wilson 27:09. These three will pay for their success with harder handicap times next month. Elsewhere in the field Steve Gadd 21:39, Sharon Griffiths 36:46 and Mari Jones 42:57 ran their first handicap, hopefully the impromptu shower and mud hasn’t put them off.

Sunday saw a few harriers in disguise, racing in the Border League Road Series for their second claim clubs at Mold. In a lovely morning for the penultimate race in the series , the hilly 5 mile course compromised of a top class field. Emma Collins 37:09 continues to lead her category and increases the gap. For the men, Craig Jones had an excellent run finishing in 31:42, followed by great runs for Vic Belshaw in his second run of the weekend and third of the week 32:22 and Tony Benton 36:37.

Noel Morris Handicap April Results

Storm clouds were gathering but the first runners went off in sunshine which at first made the digital clock (thanks Roger) difficult to read. That soon changed as the squall moved through and temperatures dropped. Dawn, in difficulties again with her back injury, had brought her folding chair, but didn’t get much chance to use it before the seat was soaked and she was called upon for the vital job of giving out the finishing discs. Fred called out the times and I wrote them down, enabling the following results to go down in history:

………………………….Finishing time………Actual time……Points

1st Tony B………….. 7.05.57pm……………..23m27……………1

2nd Anwen…………..7.06.06………………….28m06…………..2

20th Mari………………..12.57……………………..42m57………….20

Ian J pulled out injured.

The very heavy conditions in this race favoured the fitter people but Anwen and Kate W are back from injury and have lacked any recent form. Clearly they have retained more resilience for tough cross country than I expected. More predictable was Vic powering through, along with recent recruits Huw and Phil, but only just getting in front of Sioned and Sali, who are fast becoming dependably competent at this game. Welcome to Steve, Sharon, and Mari, and welcome back to Ruth and Diane. Perhaps I should feel obliged to say something good about Tony B and Tony W, but as it might be embarrassing for them I won’t sentimentalise about their moderately reasonable performances.

Next race in this series is the first Tuesday in May – same time, same place. Handicaps will be published shortly.
