Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 15/6/19

Tuesday night was the penultimate race of the Tuesday Evening Fell Race Series and Menai Baugh was there in her bid to retain her age category title. This 4.5 mile  race was at Abergwyngregyn – starting up a grassy hill with over 800 ft of steep climb within the first mile. The route follows a grassy track to Aber Falls followed by another 400ft climb before the long mile and a half descent down to the finish. Menai’s time was  50 minutes 11 seconds, securing the first F60 prize and a two minute improvement on last year’s time.

Saturday saw Tony Wood  taking on the 20k Foel Fras fell race with 1077m of climbing.  Although the race is named after on hill it actually takes you up another substantial hill Drum (770 m) before getting to Foel Fras. After the stunning views from Foel Fras the race then climbs Moel Gweliian before heading back to the finish over three more hills; yr Arya, Drosgl and Moel Wnion.  This mountain journey took Tony a creditable 2h23’20.

Also at the weekend Sioned Lloyd ran the Coed y Brenin Trail Half Marathon which climbs over 2,000 feet on rough paths and track having only decided to do it two weeks ago. Sioned still managed to knock 11 mins off her last course personal best finishing in  2.21.

With many local Parkruns called off because of the weather on Saturday the Harriers had limited choices for participation. This did not stop Mari Williams from achieving a great personal best in Cardiff.

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 8/6/19

In the Denbigh Harriers monthly Summer handicap race this week numbers were a little depleted possibly due to the torrential rain. However 24 Harriers ventured out in the rain to run on the 3 mile course over soggy fields around Denbigh. The first three runners to finish were 1st Roger Snaith, 2nd Diane Roberts and 3rd Tony Wood.
On Wednesday Tony Wood raced in a fell race called The Beast which is actually a 4.5 mile race in Maeshafn near Llanferres that climbs 1,200’,  mostly in the first mile. Tony ran the race and finished strongly in 40:34 improving on his previous best for this race.
Just 2 Harriers at the first race of the Deestriders off road series. Duncan Jones and Dawn Marshall pulled on their green vests for this mixed terrain race. A couple of laps of the cricket pitch followed by a couple of cross-country laps before finishing with a reverse lap of the cricket pitch, this race has everything – long grass, narrow overtaking places and though there isn’t much climb, there is a lovely steep bank to get up – twice! Good runs for both Duncan Jones and Dawn Marshall in 35:40 and 45:40 respectively though the official results aren’t out yet. Both found it slower underfoot than previously on this course.

June Handicap Results

Newly re-attached to my computer, I can now put up those long awaited results. I gather that the evening was wet and it was slippery underfoot, so in the circumstances there seem to have been very reasonable performances compared to the last two months. The July start list will need a bit of contemplation but I see that the first dozen or so arrived within the first minute. Very glad to have Rob in charge!

Denbigh Harriers Volunteering at Bodelwyddan Castle Parkrun 25/5/19

It was great to see so many members, present and past, supporting the Bodelwyddan Castle Parkrun on Saturday with the additional bonus of promoting the Fairy Freckled Cow Trail Race on the 7th July. Denbigh Harriers took most of the volunteering posts on the roster with 16 volunteers:

Andrew MORRIS  •  Bob NEALE  •  Caroline DAWE  •  David BAUGH   •  David SPENCER  •  Dawn MARSHALL   •  Jon WHITEHEAD  •  Katy BAUGH  •  Mark JONES  •  Meirion Wyn ROBERTS  (ex Denbigh Harrier) •  Menai BAUGH  •  Roger SNAITH  •  Sali POWELL  •  Sioned GRIFFITHS  •  Steve GADD • Victoria WHITEHEAD

The Volunteers

The Volunteers complete with Fairy Freckled Cow Trail race t shirts and Tutus!

The resounding response from those who volunteered was how much they enjoyed the experience. Volunteering at a Parkrun is really rewarding way of spending some of a Saturday morning. Your efforts are really appreciated by the runners and being a runner yourself you know how to support properly! Parkruns cannot exist without volunteers and a good rule of thumb is to volunteer once for every 10 Parkruns you do.

We had 7 runners too with some great results all round.

1st Shaun HUGHES 00:18:18
23rd Duncan JONES 00:23:49
28th Mari WILLIAMS 00:24:12
40th Ian JONES 00:25:29

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 18/5/19

The Cader Idris Fell Race is one of the main fixtures of the year in Wales and this year there was a large field assembled in Dolgellau for this classic. Mari Williams took on her first big mountain race and seemed unperturbed by the steep and craggy route. First Harrier Home was Tony Wood who like David Baugh and Sioned LLoyd who followed him in still had the effects of last week’s race in his legs. It was a great day in the mountains with excellent views, camaraderie and running throughout.

Chris Baldwin took part in the Welsh Senior and Inter Regional Trail Running Championships at Builth Wells. Strangely, The race was 10K but the steep inclines made it feel a lot longer. Chris was 4th in his M65 age category.

There were perfect conditions on the three versions of the undulating 2 lakes races held at Llyn Brenig and taking in Llyn Alwen for the longer distances. First underway was the half marathon where it was a lonely race for Melina Morris who in spite of this finished 3rd lady and 9th overall in 1:48:58. Next off was the 10k with Duncan Jones 9th and 1st M60 and first Harrier home in 49:52 and quicker than last year. Next was Fred Jones in 51:39, 12th and 2nd M60 as he builds his mileage up. Next up was Dawn Marshall who had a competitive race all the way round to finish 2 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor in a sprint finish and a time of 63:10, Rebekah Dumayne racing in Denbigh Harriers green for the first time and looked very comfortable as she finished 68:08. In the 5k, Caroline Dawe also pulling on a Harriers vest for the first time was 2nd lady and 6th overall in 29:40.

There were 11 Denbigh Harriers racing in the Chester Half Marathon on Sunday on a humid day but luckily with no wind. There were great performances from all. This is a huge race with thousands of competitors from around the UK so it was a real achievement for Emma Collins to win her F55 category.

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 11/5/19

A record number of 43 Denbigh Harriers started the third in the Summer Handicap series this week with good handicapping ensuring some close finishes for the officials to cope with.  In her first race in the series and in 1st place was Caz Dawe 29:48. She was followed in 2nd place by by Julie Roberts in 30:53 and then octogenarian Ron Birch 3rd  place in 37:07. The fastest man was Shaun Hughes  in 18th place in a time of 18:04 and the fasted woman was Mel Morris in 22:52 in 15th place. With 5 races to go in the series it is shaping up to be an interesting competition.
On Saturday seven Harriers took on the Moel Eilio fell race that follows a classic horseshoe route from Llanberis taking in Moel Eilio, Foel Goch and Moel Cynghorion before heading back to Llanberis. At eight miles and with 3000’ foot of climbing it was adventurous of Hywel Roberts to take this on as his first fell race. The weather was kind and all the Harriers had a great afternoon of fell racing. First Harrier home in this North Wales Championships race was Tony Wood showing a welcome return to form in 31st place with a time of 1:26:50. Next back in Llanberis was David Baugh in 41st in 1:30:42 followed by Sioned Griffiths 85th in 1:49:04, Elen Baugh and Hywel Roberts together in 1:50:06 and winning the F60 category was Menai Baugh in 1:54:54. Jon Whitehead wisely decided to not risk further injury by walking and jogging down from Bwlch Maesgwm.
There were a number of Harriers running Parkruns this weekend with Sian Pritchard in Kingston (England) running in 28:19, Sarah Bayliss in the hilly Wepre Parkrun finishing in 29:32, Manfredi Torlado in Florence (Italy) running in 20:50 and Gwenan Johnson finishing the Bodelwyddan Castle Parkrun in 28:59.

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 4/5/19

This was another busy weekend of running for Denbigh Harriers.  Four Harriers were amongst the 382 who turned out, in perfect weather conditions, for the scenic, but tough, Llangollen Trail 10K, on Sunday. A well organised race with fantastic atmosphere. It’s a challenging route that takes runners through mixed terrain, along the Llangollen canal towpath and then up into the fields and hills above. Shaun Hughes was in excellent form; not just winning the race but also smashing the course record in 36.49. Next Harrier home, with another strong run was Daniel Jones, in 9th position overall and a time of 40.51. Mel Morris (Melina Morris) was first female Harrier across the line, picking up 1st W40 (6th female overall) in 47.05 and then Ruth Crowther finished the Harriers line up in a fantastic 1:02:24 (94th female) marking her return after the Coast Half Marathon 3 weeks ago.

1st    36:49    Shaun    Hughes
9th    40:51    Daniel    Jones
59th    47:05    Melina    Morris
250th    01:02:24    Ruth    Crowther

Alaw Medi took on the undulating (800’ of climb) Limerick Marathon in hot conditions and was on target for 3 hours 45 until she hit the infamous wall at 22 miles. However with some encouragement from supporters she completed the race in an excellent personal best of 3.50.04.

Two Harriers ran the Liverpool 10k on Sunday and were delighted with their personal best times. Ieuan Lewis and Lian Jones ran the race together to finish in 1:00:36.

Sarah Bayliss competed in this weekend’s British Orienteering Championships.
In Saturday’s sprint race around Bradford University it was fast, relying on quick navigation and route choice. She was really delighted to finish 7th in women’s vets, the biggest age class. Sunday  was the long distance event on open moorland with almost no paths to aid navigation. There were 81 entries in W50, of which 57 ran the long course and  Sarah finished 16th, her best result ever.

Three Harriers, Emma Collins, Victoria Whitehead and Tony Benton ventured into the multi discipline Triathlon scene by competing in the Ruthin Sprint event.  All completing the event in good times with the details not available yet.

Seven Harriers took ran Parkruns this weekend.

Colder than most previous handicap races in May at 12C and overcast, but dry and firmer ground than last month. The record number of participants possibly caused some to start too fast and then the queues at the stiles provided a welcome breather (says he with feeling!). Huge thanks to Rob P, Tony B, and Katy for coping well with some very close finishing groups (which is the point of a handicap race, I suppose). Our recruitment sergeant, Ian, did a fantastic job in cajoling so many first-timers to try this really quite hard 3 mile cross country course. As we have always said for the women (and the elderly men) if you can complete this one, you can look forward to competing in the North Wales League in the autumn and winter – especially as you will improve if continuing to do this one over the next few months. Congratulations to Caz, who underestimated her ability by just a bit – and will get a more realistic start-time for June. Big improvements by Mari J and Tracey (who is getting just a tad unpredictable, I have to say), another strong run by octogenarian Ron, confirming that he always goes well in dryer conditions, and an astonishingly good run from Menai (again). Mari W stayed ahead of Tracey and was faster than in-form Elen – which bodes very well for a Women’s team including a resurgent Victoria and a flying Mel. Welcome to everyone else on their maiden voyages and hope to see you on the Tuesday and/or Thursday training nights.
